How well do you know the brands you love?
This question should be asked not only about the fashion industry, but also about food, health/beauty products, and technology. A new wave of conscious consumers are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint and take part in the movement for more ethical and sustainable business practices. I certainly do not know as much as I would like to know about what I wear, eat, and use on a daily basis. I also cannot say that I actively seek out this information about the brands I love. It has always been more of a "bonus" if I found out that the company doesn't manufacture their clothes in sweatshops, doesn't grow their animals in a tiny cage, and doesn't treat their factory workers like disposable utensils. Company transparency is hard to come by, and that's partly the reason why many people (including myself) do not even attempt to do their due diligence before signing a term agreement or giving my money to a company.
I would like to be a more conscious shopper. A more conscious human in society of issues regarding politics and social justice. A more conscious friend that knows when to shut up and when to give advice. "Stay woke" as the kids say these days (says the inner grandma in me lol).
I want to introduce you to a brand that I've recently gotten to know and fell in love with. JORD Watches uses wood as the primary material to add a natural and organic sense to a traditional luxury watch. My favourite thing about their wooden watch is that it FEELS AMAZING. It's light, it doesn't feel cold when you put it on (that initial unpleasant feeling when you put on metal watches), and it makes me feel good that it is a sustainable fashion piece. But how do I know this? Plain and simple, I asked the guys at JORD directly.

What was the inspiration behind using wood for watches?
"The inspiration behind our company was that the owner's father (3 brothers) has always been a watch collector and this rubbed off on his sons/ When the youngest brother received a wooden watch from another company, he like the idea, but the quality he felt was lacking. So he and his brothers decided that they could do it better. Fast forward to a few years (we started in 2013) and here we are. ｡◕‿‿◕｡"
Where are the watches assembled and made?
"The watches are designed, repaired, and shipped from the US. While our manufacturing facility is in China, we manage and have our own team on-site. Additionally, our owners visit the facility every time we are about to introduce a new series to our line of watches. Furthermore, in the facility that we manage, we ensure that our manufacturers are treated, paid appropriately, and trained adequately. Lastly, our watches are not treated with any harmful materials and are only conditioned with a natural tung oil."
What is JORD's view on sustainable fashion?
"Our views on sustainability are very focused. We get our wood from sustainable harvesting sources and we even receive a portion of our wood from reclaimed furniture. This works due to the fact that our links and watch faces can be made from smaller pieces of wood that would otherwise be in the waste cycle."
