Hello Civello

Say hello to the beautifully transformed Civello on South Granville. I was lucky to join the team on their grand re-opening of the salon for a sneak peek of what's trending this season and get some inspiration for my holiday look. ;)

Definitely felt hair-envy for all the models. I am very excited for what kind of look they will create on me in the future (will keep you posted!).

If you know and love Aveda products, rest assured that you will be in good hands and your hair will be pampered with natural products. Ray Civello has a deeply rooted relationship with Aveda as the founder of Collega International, which is the sole distributor of Aveda products in Canada as well as the parent company to 4 Aveda Institutes across the nation. Need I say more? You can trust his salons with your hair.

I highly recommend checking them out. Especially if you have been searching for a team who understands your natural hair and who will make sure you leave the salon with healthy locks! If you are unfamiliar with Aveda products, I would suggest that you walk into an Aveda Institute and the experts there will ED.U.CATE. you.

Kudos to all hairstylists who help people look and feel beautiful, inside and out!

Moving Toward Balance - My Skincare Routine with Aveda's Tulasara™ (GIVEAWAY!)

Fall is fast approaching and my skin is getting thirrrrsty from all the sun damage I've inflicted on myself over the summer. All that sunrise and sunset chasing adds up...

I had an amazing opportunity to join Aveda's mission in wellness and beauty and to try out their new skincare line, Tulasara. Tulasara™ means "moving towards balance" in Sanskrit. If you are interested in the story behind this line, click hereThis blog will mainly be about what I think of the product and how I have incorporated into my skincare routine for the past couple of weeks.

PSSSST! Aveda is graciously giving away full-sized bottles of the Tulasara™ collection (valued at $180) to my readers! Eeek!! Giveaway rules & details are at the end of this post. :)

As a former biology nerd (I studied Cell Biology & Genetics in my Undergrad), I've learned that moisture plays a huge role when it comes to wound healing. One of the reasons why wounds in your mouth heals a lot quicker than wounds on the dryer parts of your skin is because of moisture. Constituents in your saliva (growth hormones, water, other chemical properties produced by your cells) allow for more efficient cell-cell chemical communication and allow it to proliferate and migrate. So your cells are able to generate and be replenished faster. Similarly, it's very important to moisturize your skin to provide that environment where your skin cells can repair itself.

Oleation has also been studied by scientists. It has been shown that essential oils and their constituents can act as skin penetration enhancers that allow drugs or nutrients to be delivered more easily through the skin (Herman & Herman, 2014). If you are a lazy nerd like me and want to read a condensed summary on this subject, check out the review article that I've included in the reference section at the end of this blog.

I have been finding (on myself) that the Tulasara™ Bright Concetrate and the Radiant Oleation Oil work very well together. My hypothesis is that it's because the essential oils help deliver the nutrients deep into my skin. Obviously, don't quote me on this because I'm just reading articles and making my own guesses after seeing the results on my skin.

I was very excited to join this evening of wellness and beauty. The Aveda Institute in Gastown was transformed into a yoga studio for the night! A few ladies and I were treated to a relaxing yoga session followed by some healthy snacks.

After getting all loose and limber, we sat down and learned about the therapeutic properties of the ingredients in the Tulasara line. We also got to try it out on ourselves so that we'll know how to use them at home.

My skincare routine at home

There is sort of (?) a method to my madness.

I first take off all my makeup with Shu Uemura's cleansing oil - my favourite makeup remover for the past 5 years. Then I use whatever foaming cleanser to basically strip off dirt, oil, makeup residue, etc. Now the routine begins:

1. Gently exfoliate off dead skin cells with dry brush (watch video HERE)
2. Apply radiant oleation oil and give yourself an amazing massage (you deserve it!). I use two pumps. Aveda recommends leaving the oil on your face for about 4 mintues. I've been leaving it on for longer because for one, it smells amazing, and two, I take that time to brush my teeth, groom my nails, etc.
3. I use a cotton pad and toner to remove the oil off my face. I've already washed my face clean with a foaming cleanser at the beginning, so I don't need to strip everything off again. Using the cotton pad and toner to remove the oil allows you to see whatever dirt and gunk your skin was storing. Gross and satisfying.
4. Moisturize with lotion of choice.
5. I put one pump of the bright concentrate on my finger and apply on my cheeks, nose, and forehead.
6. If I see any unwanted friends popping up on my face, I'll spot treat it with some lavender oil.

That's basically my nightly routine! Yes, everything is lavender scented. I am obsessed and it makes me feel like a princess at night, okayyy? It's not based off of anything scientifically proven, so you do you booboo!

In the morning, I've been using the oleation oil, bright concentrate, and light moisturizer before applying makeup. I'm generally not a morning person and end up rushing out of the house on most days, so I skip the dry brushing.

Changes I've noticed:

- Makeup applies more evenly and smoothly
- Decreased pigmentation in my acne scars
- Skin feels smoother and more supple to the touch
- Less oil production on my face throughout the day (surprising, but hey, I'll take it!)
